Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.

First Adventure

The three elves have tracked down the group of goblins who attacked the town to this cave. As they get closer, they are spotted by the goblin guard. He lifts a horn and raises the alarm.

Alonna quickly fires at the goblins neck. He drops the horn and holds his wounded neck.

Jay gestures, and magic energy emerges from her hand, dispatching the goblin.

As the goblin’s body hits the ground, four more goblins round the corner, spears in hand, ready to defend their spoils. Arctis Tor swing his flail and crushes the head goblin sending him flying back towards the oncoming goblins. Two of the goblins zig out of the way and extend their spears upwards at the armored elf. The third jumps over the crushed goblin body flying at him, and jumps off of what used to be it’s head. He has his spear raised high, ready to plunge down into Arctis.

Jay quickly casts magic missile and takes out one of the goblins on the ground. Alonna, on Canyon’s back, leaps over Artctis’ head, and as if jousting the goblin in the air, impails the airborn goblin, landing on top of it. Canyon mauls it just for good measure.

The final goblin strikes, but Arctis’ armor proves to be to much for it to overcome.

As Jay is preparing to cast again, an Orc lashes out with a whip from the shadows. Jay reacts in time, but stumbles down the hill and out of sight of her party members. Arctis, ignoring the goblin at his side, crushes the orc into the rock face. Alonna and Canyon leap after Jay.

Arctis feels a stab of pain as the goblin sinks his spear into a joint of the armor. Arctis smashes him into the ground. He hears running, and begins to chase an orc on foot.

Alonna has hefted Jay onto Canyon’s back, and they take pursuit of the orc as well. They quickly overcome Arctis and are closing on the orc in the forest. Alonna, trying to make sure Jay does not get injured, doesn’t notice a low hanging tree branch, and is knocked off Canyon’s back. Jay slides off and tumbles to the ground. Canyon keeps chasing the orc. They are wrestling each other when Arctis reaches them.

Arctis swings his flail, hitting and removing the arm of orc. It stumbles to the ground, and looks up at Arctis. He says “Mercy”. Arctis swings anyway, killing the orc.

They all meet up back at the cave, and found that the goblins had stolen some ail and food.

They take back the spoils to the town, who are appreciative, but not wealthy enough to offer a proper reward. Instead, they feed the trio, and give them a free night at the inn.

Canyon scares the other patrons, so Alonna and Canyon sleep in the woods.

Disturbing dream

The next morning, the elves woke up and gathered.

Alonna was shaken, and explained the dream she had.

Alonna was walking, and ended up in a cave. She was walking in a river of snakes. She found her parents, looking deathly ill. There was a hyena laughing. She turned and saw an orc. The orc was not in the cave, but Alonna was looking at him while she was in the cave. Alonna used a snake as an arrow and shot at the orc. He threw a snake at her parents, who caught it and threw it back at Alonna. The snake bit Alonna on the neck. She woke with a start.

It felt so real, that is must be a prophetic dream. Her parents must be in danger.

Jay listened, and determined that this dream was magical in origin, and that her parents were not strong enough magic users to send this dream to her. It is a trap of some kind, and she determined that is better to walk in knowing it is a trap than to go in blindly.

The group headed to the mountain that Alonna’s parents often live to check on them.

Once they arrive, they check their normal “home” and find that it looks as if nobody has been here for months.

Alonna thought to go check a cave that they usually go to that has a well in it.

Checking on the well, they find that it is missing. It looks crushed in and covered with rocks. If you didn’t know a well was there, it would look like part of the cave had fallen into a pile.

Arctis uncovers the well, and looks into the darkness. They attached a rope to the top, and Arctis climbed down, his flail glowing thanks to Jay’s magic. Down below the surface, there is a large cave with water well below the surface. He looks all around and doesn’t see anything of consequence.

He climbs out of the hole, and lets Alonna climb down. Before Alonna gets to the cave, something catches her eye. She sees a sparkle. Reaching for it, she finds that there is a hidden cave. She squeezes in, and finds another cave. Turning a corner, she sees lights in the distance. She calls back for the others to climb down.

Once all three are in the cave, they begin exploring. They come to a doorway which has Dwarven runes inscribed. They find lit torches, and find that they are magically powered. They come to a doorway. It leads down some stairs, into darkness. The path they are on keeps heading forward and curves out of sight.

Alonna suddenly remembers her dream, and that Canyon would not follow her in her dream, and he was unable to get down the well. She becomes determined to not be separated from him.

Arctis climbs back up, and tries to tie Canyon to lower him into the cave, but Canyon stubbornly refuses, and runs away, cutting part of the rope with his claws.

They all climb up, pull up the rope, and venture after Canyon, who has run off deeper into the cave.

The cave does not branch off, so it is easy to follow where Canyon must have gone. Instead of using magic, they are using torches.

They come up to a larger cave room. Something fell onto Jay’s shoulder. She reached up and grabbed a rat. She threw it across the room. Everyone looked around disgusted because the walls were swelling with rats.

The trio fought off the hoard as best they could. Jay trying to frighten them away with light. Arctis killing them with his flail. Alonna picking them off with her bow. Alonna is calling for Canyon to help the whole while. The rats are going right for Arctis, and begin chewing on his armor. Canyon burst into the room, and begins killing rats as well. They all back out of the opening, and Jay lets out another Magic Missile. It erupts in the room, and strikes all over. The remaining rats flee in terror.

The group heads back to the well, and when they arrive, they find rope hanging down into the hole.
